Mythological and Spiritual Significance of Somvati Amavasya
According to mythological beliefs, the day of Somvati Amavasya is considered the best for the peace of one's ancestors (Pitru). During the Mahabharata era, Bhishma Pitamah explained the importance of this day to Yudhishthira, stating that bathing in holy rivers on this day washes away all the sins of a human and grants them infinite merit (Akshaya Punya).
Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva; therefore, worshipping Mahadev and Mother Parvati on this day brings peace and happiness to married life. Additionally, women who wish for eternal good fortune (Akhand Saubhagya) and the long life of their husbands keep a special fast on this day and worship the Peepal tree.
How to Perform Somvati Amavasya Puja (Puja Vidhi)
The fruits of the worship performed on Somvati Amavasya are multiplied manifold. You can follow these steps for the puja:
Bathing and Resolution (Sankalp): Wake up early in the morning and bathe in a holy river. If this is not possible, mix a little 'Gangajal' in the water at home, take a bath, and take a resolution (Sankalp) to observe the fast.
Worship of Lord Shiva: Go to a home altar or a temple and perform 'Abhishek' of Lord Shiva with Gangajal, milk, and Belpatra. Chanting the mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' is considered extremely beneficial.
Worship of the Peepal Tree: There is a special tradition of worshipping the Peepal tree on this day. Offer water to the roots of the tree and, while wrapping raw cotton thread, perform 108 circumambulations (Parikrama). It is believed that the Trinity (Trimurti) and ancestors reside in the Peepal tree.
Pitru Tarpan: For the peace of your ancestors, offer water mixed with black sesame seeds. This helps in getting relief from Pitru Dosh.
Significance of Donation: After the puja, donate food, clothes, or grains to the needy according to your capacity. Donating on this day brings prosperity to the home.
What to Do and What Not to Do on Somvati Amavasya
To receive positive energy, it is necessary to follow some rules on this day:
What to do: Consume satvik (pure) food, try to remain silent, and keep your mind focused on the divine throughout the day.
