Navratri Day 1: How to Perform Kalash Sthapana? Know the Correct Puja Method and Rules

The biggest festival of divine power in Sanatan Dharma, Chaitra Navratri, is going to begin tomorrow, March 19, 2026 (Thursday). The very first and most important step of this nine-day holy ritual is 'Kalash Sthapana' or 'Ghatasthapana'. The Kalash is considered a symbol of happiness, prosperity, peace, and the entire universe. It is described in the scriptures that Lord Vishnu resides in the mouth of the Kalash, Lord Shiva in the neck (throat), and Lord Brahma at the base (root), while all the divine mother energies (Matrishaktis) reside in its middle part. Therefore, establishing the Kalash with the right method and rules on the first day of Navratri is highly fruitful. Let us know the authentic method of Kalash Sthapana and the important rules associated with it.

The Infallible and Auspicious Muhurat for Kalash Sthapana (Ghatasthapana)

Kalash Sthapana should always be done during an auspicious Muhurat. For Kalash Sthapana tomorrow (March 19, 2026) on the day of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the most auspicious time according to the Panchang will be as follows:

  • Morning Kalash Sthapana Muhurat: 06:52 AM to 07:43 AM

  • Abhijit Muhurat (Auspicious Afternoon Time): 12:05 PM to 12:53 PM

(Special Advice: If you are unable to perform the establishment in the morning, establishing the Kalash during the afternoon Abhijit Muhurat is the best alternative, as this time destroys all kinds of doshas/flaws.)

How to Perform Kalash Sthapana? (Complete Scriptural Puja Method)

Ghatasthapana is performed before worshipping 'Shailputri', the first form of Goddess Durga. Its step-by-step and simple method is given below:

  1. Purification of the Place (Pavitrikaran): Take a bath in the morning and wear clean yellow or red clothes. Clean the Ishan Kon (North-East direction) of the house thoroughly and purify it by sprinkling Gangajal.

  2. Decoration of the Chowki: Place a clean wooden stool (Chowki) at that place and spread a new red cloth over it. Make an Ashtadal Kamal (eight-petaled lotus) with Akshat (unbroken rice) on the Chowki. Establish the idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Durga.

  3. Sowing Barley (Khetri): Put a little pure soil in a wide and clean earthen pot and sow barley (Yav) in it. Put a little more soil over the barley and sprinkle a little water.

  4. Preparing the Kalash: Take a copper, brass, or earthen Kalash. Draw a 'Swastika' symbol on its outside with Roli or Sindoor (vermilion). Tie a red Mauli (Kalawa) around the neck of the Kalash.

  5. Putting Ingredients in the Kalash: Fill the Kalash with pure water and Gangajal. Now put a coin, a whole betel nut (Supari), a turmeric lump, perfume (Ittar), and some Durva (green grass) in this water.

  6. Placement of Pallav and Coconut: Place five leaves (Pallav) of mango or Ashoka on the mouth of the Kalash. After this, wrap a coconut with husk in a red Chunari, tie it with a Rakshasutra (Kalawa), and establish it exactly in the middle on top of the leaves of the Kalash.

  7. Final Establishment of the Kalash: Now place this prepared Kalash exactly in the middle of the earthen pot where the barley is sown. Take flowers and Akshat in your hands, meditate on all the Gods and Goddesses, and pray to them to reside in this Kalash for nine days.

Important Rules to Keep in Mind During Ghatasthapana

To fully receive the blessings of Mata Rani, it is mandatory to follow certain rules during Kalash Sthapana:

  • Importance of Direction: The Kalash should always be established in the Ishan Kon (North-East) of the house. While performing the Puja, facing the East direction is considered the best.

  • Face of the Coconut: While placing the coconut on the Kalash, pay special attention that the face of the coconut (the side where it connects to the branch of the tree) should be towards you (the person performing the Puja). It should not be pointing downwards or upwards.

  • Purity: Maintain a Sattvic (pure) atmosphere in the house from the day of Kalash Sthapana until Navami. Strictly avoid the consumption of Tamasic food (meat, alcohol, onions, garlic).

  • Do Not Move the Kalash: Once the Kalash is established during the auspicious Muhurat, it should not be moved from its place at all for the entire nine days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Why is rice (Akshat) kept under the Kalash?

Rice (Akshat) is considered a symbol of completeness and prosperity. By making a small pile of rice or an Ashtadal Kamal under the Kalash, there is never a shortage of food and wealth in the house, and the Puja is considered complete.

Q2. Can the Navratri fast be observed without Kalash Sthapana?

, if for some reason you are unable to perform Kalash Sthapana, you can still observe the nine-day fast by simply lighting a lamp in front of the Goddess's idol or picture and taking a Sankalp (vow).

Q3. Which mantra should be chanted at the time of Kalash Sthapana?

At the time of Kalash Sthapana, you can chant this Vedic mantra: "Kalashasya Mukhe Vishnuh Kanthe Rudrah Samashritah. Mule Tvasya Sthito Brahma Madhye Matriganah Smritah."

Conclusion

Kalash Sthapana is not just a ritual, but a beautiful medium for the descent of divine energy within us and our homes. On this holy occasion of the Hindu New Year and Chaitra Navratri starting tomorrow, perform Ghatasthapana following the methods and rules mentioned above. Maa Bhavani will bring the blessings of happiness, peace, good health, and immense success to your family. Wishing you a very Happy Navratri on behalf of 'Skill Astro'!
