Complete Method of Kalash Sthapana: How to Start Navratri at Home

The grand commencement of Chaitra Navratri and the Hindu New Year, the most sacred festivals of divine power in Sanatan Dharma, is set for tomorrow, March 19, 2026 (Thursday). During these nine days of Navratri, nine different forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped, but the foundation of this entire ritual is the 'Kalash Sthapana' (Ghatasthapana) performed on the first day.

The Kalash is considered a symbol of the universe, residing all gods, goddesses, holy rivers, and the nine planets (Navagrahas). Many people wonder: "Can I perform Kalash Sthapana at home by myself without a priest?" The answer is—Yes! If you have true devotion in your heart and follow the correct method described in the scriptures, Mata Rani will surely accept your worship. Let’s learn how you can easily perform Kalash Sthapana at your home tomorrow.

Auspicious Muhurat for Kalash Sthapana Tomorrow (March 19, 2026)

Kalash Sthapana should always be performed during the auspicious Muhurat of the Pratipada Tithi. According to the Panchang, the most auspicious times for tomorrow are:

  • Best Morning Muhurat: 06:52 AM to 07:43 AM

  • Abhijit Muhurat (Auspicious Afternoon Time): 12:05 PM to 12:53 PM

If you are unable to perform the establishment in the morning, establishing the Kalash during the afternoon Abhijit Muhurat will be highly fruitful.

Essential Materials for Kalash Sthapana at Home

Before starting, gather all these materials in one place:

  • A Kalash made of clay, copper, or brass (Avoid using iron or steel)

  • A lid (cover) for the Kalash

  • A wide earthen pot (Kunda) and pure soil for sowing barley (Yav)

  • A small amount of barley seeds

  • Pure water and a little Gangajal

  • 5 or 7 leaves (Pallav) of Mango or Ashoka

  • A coconut with husk and water inside

  • Red cotton cloth or Chunari (to wrap the coconut)

  • Kalawa (Mauli), Kumkum, turmeric lump, whole betel nut (Supari), Durva grass, and a coin

  • Akshat (unbroken rice) and fresh flowers

Complete and Simple Method of Kalash Sthapana

Tomorrow morning, after bathing, wear clean clothes (preferably yellow or red) and welcome the Mother Goddess using the following method:

  1. Selection and Purification of Space: Clean the place of worship in the Ishan Kon (North-East direction) of your house. Purify it by sprinkling Gangajal. Place a wooden stool (Chowki) and spread a clean red cloth over it.

  2. Sowing Barley (Khetri): Place some pure soil in the wide earthen pot (Kunda). Spread the barley seeds and cover them with another thin layer of soil, then sprinkle a little water. Barley is considered a symbol of the happiness and prosperity entering the home.

  3. Preparing the Kalash: Take the Kalash and draw the auspicious 'Swastika' symbol on the outside using Roli or vermilion. Tie the red Kalawa (Mauli) three times around the neck of the Kalash.

  4. Filling the Kalash: Fill the Kalash to the brim with pure water and Gangajal. Add a coin, a whole betel nut, a lump of turmeric, and some Durva grass into the water.

  5. Establishing Pallav and Coconut: Place the Mango or Ashoka leaves on the mouth of the Kalash (the stems should be inside). Wrap the coconut in the red Chunari, tie it with Kalawa, and establish it exactly in the center of the leaves.

  6. Final Placement and Invocation: Place this fully prepared Kalash exactly in the center of the earthen pot containing the barley. Taking Akshat and flowers in your hands, meditate on Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga, and the Navagrahas. Pray to them to reside in this Kalash for nine days and bless your home.

Infallible Rules and Precautions

  • Direction of the Coconut: While placing the coconut on the Kalash, ensure the "face" of the coconut (where it was attached to the tree) is facing you (the person performing the puja).

  • Integrity: Once established during the auspicious Muhurat, the Kalash should not be moved or shifted from its place for the entire nine days.

  • Purity: The household where Kalash Sthapana is performed must maintain complete purity for nine days. The entry of meat, alcohol, garlic, and onions is strictly prohibited.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Which direction should we face while worshipping?

Facing East or North is considered best while performing Kalash Sthapana and worshipping the Goddess.

Q2. What should be done with the Kalash water and coconut after Navratri?

After the completion of Navratri (on Dashami Tithi), sprinkle the Kalash water throughout the house using a mango leaf (this removes negativity) and pour the remaining water into a sacred plant (except Tulsi). The coconut can be distributed among family members as Prasad.

Q3. Is it necessary to light an Akhand Jyot (continuous lamp)?

This depends entirely on your devotion and capability. If you can tend to the lamp for nine days, light an Akhand Jyot; otherwise, you may simply light a regular lamp every morning and evening.

Conclusion

Performing Kalash Sthapana at home is a sacred way to respectfully invite Goddess Bhagwati into your abode. On this holy occasion of Chaitra Navratri starting tomorrow, establish the Ghatasthapana using this simple scriptural method. When you call upon the Mother with a sincere heart, she fills your home with peace, health, and immense success.
